Reasoning About Abortion
Were you born by chance? My mother has said I was an accident but for God there are no accidents. The Bible teaches that God knows all things before they occur.
“For His eyes are upon the ways of man, and he sees all his steps.” – Job 34:21
God chooses what kind of life He desires for us before we are born. So He tells Jeremiah,
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.” – Jeremiah 1:5
Paul in Galatians 1:15,16 testifies to being set apart in a way similar to Jeremiah, and in the passage below from Ephesians, Paul glorifies God for election in general.
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ: according as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will.” – Ephesians 1:3-5
From before our birth God has been dwelling upon our lives; He loves us all and shows kindness to all; if His grace is upon us He brings us into a second birth in the Spirit to eternal life. Nothing can make God give up on His promises or obligations to those He has made.
As he says to Israel, comparing her to a child,
“Can a woman forget her nursing child, and not have compassion on the son of her womb? Surely they may forget, yet I will not forget you. See, I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands; your walls are continually before Me.” – Isaiah 49:15,16
If God has plans for a child to life, how can someone justify taking away that life in the womb? God forms a person full of potential; a mother should not snuff it out. Someone may say if it was possible to kill the fetus then the child must not be elect and God has in any case permitted it. That is a terrible conclusion. Someone could likewise justify any action saying “God let the destroyer destroy, why should I try to be different?” No, we are blessed with the breath of life from God and made in His image. If mothers love the children then the core of human life on earth has had a blessed beginning.
Listen to what David says in Psalm 139.
You formed my inward parts;
You covered me in my mother’s womb.
I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
marvelous are Your works,
and that my soul knows very well.
My frame was not hidden from You,
when I was made in secret,
and skillfully wrought in the lowest parts
of the earth. Your eyes saw my substance,
being yet unformed.
And in Your book they all were written,
the days fashioned for me,
when as yet there were none of them.
How precious also are Your thoughts to me,
O God! How great is the sum of them!
If I should count them, they would be more in number than the sand;
when I awake, I am still with You.
– Psalm 139:13-18
What is a fetus or child in the womb? Some people say it is a person, a baby. One thing is even more clear, it is a potential person. Therefore when a person aborts the fetus in their womb they cut off the trajectory of that soul. The fetus is a person because it must have a soul in order to live (at least one day) as a person and make eternal decisions, even if that soul is not present in the body.
Since 1973 there have been about 50 million abortions in the U.S. Over 70% of abortion clinics are in minority neighborhoods. This is the slaughter of some very beautiful people. In what way is it a right for a mother to kill her child? How can some people be so fierce in the defense of that legal option? Tell me: why is a child’s right to live scorned, that claim for the child treated like a moral abomination, subject to termination at a single parent’s will? And for the most part we ignore what happens all the time in these clinics.
I understand people make mistakes and a lot of times regret it later. A woman who has had an abortion has a recourse in Jesus Christ who died to share His life with us. He was willing to die to show His love for us. Have you ever loved someone so much that you would die for them? God loves us more than we love ourselves and whatever sins you have committed He wants to wash you clean in the water of His Word.
My sins have been abominable, and I have sinned terribly before and after getting saved. But there is no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus. I don’t want you to be stuck in grief or feel unloved. He knows our needs and desires and wants to help us. And He has that power if only we should repent and come back to Him wholehearted. Blessings in Christ to those who love Him.
